Common Core, EQI, and AVID, a match made in . . . Washington D.C.

To paraphrase an American historical figure, “The Common Core is coming! The Common Core is coming!”

What would happen if . . . teachers greeted students at the door?

By Miceal Kelly, RIMSAVID Program Manager

What simple thing can I change in my classroom that would improve my relationship with students tomorrow?

Will improved relationships change the academics in my entire class?

What will happen to my relationship with my students if I greet them at the door with a positive comment, handshake, or knuckles?

Do I really believe that building positive relationships with students is important?

What would happen if . . . all students were engaged Part 2

By Mike Horton,  AVID Administrator

Have you ever heard students come into your class and say, “That science lecture last period was so exciting, I didn’t want it to end!”?  How about “Wow, those math problems were so GREAT!  I wanted to stay during lunch and finish them up!”?

California Assembly Hears AVID

Granger Ward, AVID California's State Director, and Máximo Escobedo, owner of maximo, inc. and a member of the very first AVID class in 1980, testified on March 8th before the California State Assembly Subcommittee/Working Group on English Language Learners. Granger and Máximo were joined by AVID sophomore Mayra Santiago, AVID teacher Erick Wohlenberg and AVID principal Dave Terwilliger, all three from San Juan High School in Sacramento County. Their testimony was powerful enough to induce the Subcommittee/Working Group to recall Granger for follow-up testimony as there's interest in finding a transition/bridge program for ELL students. Bravo to all. More to come certainly!
